Loading Metadata Using Data Management in Oracle EPM Cloud Applications

Do you ever struggle with formatting the metadata file to the exact format that Oracle EPM Cloud can handle? Oracle recently released a new feature that allows administrators to build a metadata load file in any format, from any source, and load the metadata to an Oracle EPM Cloud Application. For example, administrators can now incorporate the metadata load into the monthly data load process using EPM Automate.

The following applications are currently supported:

  • Oracle Planning and Budgeting Cloud Service (PBCS)
  • Oracle Enterprise Planning and Budgeting Cloud Service (EPBCS)
  • Oracle Financial Consolidation and Close Cloud Service (FCCS)
  • Oracle Tax Reporting Cloud Service (TRCS)

How to Setup Metadata in Data Management in EPBCS/PBCS

The following instructions are steps to setup an EPBCS/PBCS metadata integration process.

First, you need to create a target application in data management. To create a target application, go to “Target Application” and click on the “Add” button.

Select “Dimensions”.

Select the planning application (Prefix is optional) and click OK.

This will generate six dimension target applications. These are Account, Entity, Scenario, Version, Custom, and Smart List.

Application Details will display the properties of the entity dimension.

Here is a sample metadata file for this demo.

Next, create an import format based on the sample metadata file above. (Make sure you select Delimited – All Data Type)

Then, create a location for the import format.

In Data Load Rule, add a new rule for this metadata load process.

Define the mappings for each property of the Entity dimension. In the following example, the mapping is a one-to-one mapping. However, there are several other mapping methods that can be utilized within “Data Load Mapping”.

Execute the data load rule. In Data Workbench, the parent, entity member name, and the alias will display in the staging table. After the load completes, there should be a green checkmark next to the data load rule.

Now, navigate to the dimension editor and select the Entity dimension. The Entity dimension should have the hierarchy in the sample metadata populated.

Overall, the ability to load metadata in data management allows you to have more flexibility with the formatting of the source metadata file. This feature can streamline the monthly data load process by handling kick-out issue.
